Snapchat vs. Instagram

Just when you think you have the hang of all the types of social media, the universe throws a curve ball — hello, Instagram stories. Instagram updated its app on August the 2nd with stories which, in my book, was pretty much a knock-off of snapchat. As a social media content manager, I have been receiving a lot of questions about the change, so I thought I would share my 2 cents…

While I do really miss the filters and geotags that snapchat offers and was adamantly against Insta Stories in the beginning, I am starting to like them more and more everyday…here is why: Everything is in one app. You don’t have to tell your Instagram followers to head over to another app to follow you. This is huge because honestly, I probably follow 50 people on snapchat. In my mind, it was too much of a “hassle” to type their name into my search bar and add them.

It is also a remarkable resource for businesses. I am interested to see what UPS brought my fav local boutique. I am interested to see what houses my relator is going into today. And, like snapchat, the pics don’t have to be perfect. They can be flawed, funny, or even basic. They are just behind the scenes glimpses.

Of course there are a few accounts that I follow on Instagram that I am very UNinterested to see their stories of anything they do behind the scenes (no offense Gray Malin but I only want to see your pretty photography). Which brings me to the things I hope are to come on Instagram Stories: Unfollowing stories and of course, filters please!

All of this to say, I could be completely wrong and Instagram Stories will not stick around. There are a few bloggers I follow and respect that are still hard core snapchat (like Elsie of a Beautiful Mess and Mckenna Bleu). Only time will truly tell. My piece of advice while waiting out the storm: stick to one. Don’t bounce between the two. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
